The Varanasi Ring Road is not a city-centre road. It is a 59.8 km peripheral bypass designed to keep through-traffic away from the congested urban core.

The principal Varanasi Ring Road exit points for tourists are Harhua in the northwest, Sandaha in the north, and Mohansarai–Rakhauna in the southeast. Each serves a different arrival direction and a different part of the city’s spatial layout.
The Ring Road is a distribution system, not a final destination. The correct exit can save time; the wrong one can place a traveler on the opposite side of the urban congestion.
The anatomy of the 59.8 km bypass
The Ring Road was developed by the National Highways Authority of India under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. Its estimated cost is ₹3,400 crore. The road is approximately four lanes and has been planned for expansion to six lanes.

- Phase 2, extending for 16.98 km from Rakhauna on NH-19 toward Vajidpur, had its first package opened in October 2021.
- The northern connection involving the Ganga bridge was partially open by mid-2025. Its operational condition should be checked before a journey because partial opening does not necessarily mean that every approach, lane, or connecting road is functioning as a continuous tourist route.
The spatial logic is more useful than memorizing project phases. Harhua serves the airport and Sarnath side of the city. Sandaha handles northern movement, including the Ghazipur approach and the Ganga crossing. Mohansarai and Rakhauna receive traffic from the southern and southeastern highway network.

For airport arrivals, the route decision is usually simple. Conversely, accommodation near Sarnath can be efficiently reached from Harhua but may require a separate cross-city transfer for dawn visits to the riverfront or evening movement around Godowlia.
The airport transfer problem
Airport traffic is often treated as a single category. It is not. The best road depends on the destination after arrival.
For a hotel in Sarnath, Harhua is the natural peripheral entry. For accommodation near the railway station or central temple district, the route continues inward and may encounter congestion after leaving the bypass. When Sandaha is the better choice
Sandaha is suited to four main movement patterns:
- Arrival from Ghazipur and the eastern side of the regional highway network.

Sandaha versus Harhua
Harhua and Sandaha overlap only in the broad sense that both serve the northern half of Varanasi. Their practical roles differ.
Harhua is tied to NH-56, the airport, and the northwestern approach. Sandaha is tied to NH-31, the Ganga crossing, and the northeastern approach toward Ghazipur. A traveler choosing between them should begin with the direction of arrival, not with an assumption that one is always faster.

The choice is therefore geographic. Harhua is not a substitute for Sandaha when the vehicle is arriving from Ghazipur. Sandaha is not a universal shortcut from the airport.
Mohansarai and Rakhauna: the southern highway approach
Mohansarai and Rakhauna form the relevant Ring Road access point for traffic arriving from the south and southeast. The interchange connects the bypass with NH-19, the old Grand Trunk Road. It serves vehicles coming from Prayagraj, Mirzapur, and Kolkata.
This is the appropriate outer route for travelers approaching Varanasi from the southern highway network. It prevents long-distance traffic from entering the city through the central road grid before reaching its destination. The spatial advantage is greatest for vehicles that would otherwise travel through congested corridors near Rathyatra, Sigra, and adjoining commercial districts.
The interchange does not place a traveler directly at Godowlia. It transfers highway traffic to the next stage of the journey. Vehicles continuing toward the central temples or riverfront must use connecting urban roads. The final route may pass through the Cantt or southern city network, depending on the destination and current traffic conditions.
Mohansarai for pilgrims and temple visitors
For travelers arriving from Prayagraj or Mirzapur, Mohansarai–Rakhauna is the natural first decision point. The relevant question is not whether this exit reaches the temple district directly. It does not. The question is whether it prevents a vehicle from entering Varanasi too early through highway-to-city roads that were not designed for modern through-traffic.
For a destination near Kashi Vishwanath, the route has two distinct components:
- Regional approach: NH-19 to the Ring Road and the Mohansarai–Rakhauna interchange.
- Urban approach: local arterial roads from the southern or southeastern edge toward the central shrine district.

Varanasi’s historic districts contain roads that are narrow, discontinuous, or inaccessible to larger vehicles. A hotel described as being near Kashi Vishwanath may not have a vehicle-accessible frontage.
Why the southern route can still become slow
The Ring Road removes highway traffic from the inner city. It does not prevent local congestion after the Mohansarai exit. Commercial roads, railway approaches, market areas, and temple-bound traffic continue to converge on the central urban structure.
The bypass is most effective when the traveler uses it to postpone entry into the city. It is less effective when the driver leaves it at the wrong point and then crosses several congested districts to recover the route. This is why the best routes to Varanasi city center depend on the final destination, not simply the shortest distance shown on a map.
For a hotel near the railway station, a central approach may be more direct. For a riverfront property, the practical route may terminate before the ghat lanes. For a group vehicle or coach, the usable stopping location can be more important than the nominal road distance.
From the Ring Road to Kashi Vishwanath
Traveling from the Ring Road to Kashi Vishwanath requires a transfer from peripheral infrastructure to the historic street network. The temple lies within the dense central fabric near Godowlia and the riverfront. The Ring Road cannot function as a direct temple access road because it is positioned outside that fabric.
The route should be planned in layers:
1. Identify the arrival highway. NH-56, NH-31, and NH-19 lead to different Ring Road entry points.
2. Select the appropriate interchange. Harhua, Sandaha, or Mohansarai–Rakhauna should correspond to the direction of travel.
3. Separate the city transfer from the highway transfer. The road from the interchange to the centre is a second route with different congestion and access conditions.
4. Confirm the vehicle endpoint. The last motorable point may be some distance from the temple or ghat.
5. Allow for pedestrian movement. The historic core is not organized around continuous vehicle access.
This structure avoids a common navigation error. A route planner may correctly show the Ring Road as the fastest way around Varanasi but still produce an impractical final approach to the temple. The bypass is a regional road. Kashi Vishwanath is reached through the city’s central access system and, often, a pedestrian segment.
The same principle applies to travelers staying near Dashashwamedh Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, or the southern ghats. The nearest Ring Road exit is not necessarily the best indicator of arrival time. The destination’s location on the riverfront and the permitted vehicle approach matter more.
For the central shrine district, the final accessible road is a more useful planning fact than the distance from the Ring Road.
How the Varuna Elevated Corridor may change the route map
The planned Varuna Elevated Corridor is intended to alter the relationship between northern highway traffic and central Varanasi. The Union Cabinet approved a 43.218 km corridor at a capital cost of ₹10,998.32 crore. It is designed to connect NH-31 directly with the Varanasi Ring Road along the Varuna River.
The stated objective is to reduce the journey between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station from approximately 40 minutes to 20 minutes. The planned operating speed is 80–100 km/h. These figures describe the proposed corridor’s design and expected function. They do not mean that the corridor is already fully constructed or available for current journeys.
The project is being advanced under the Hybrid Annuity Model. Its significance lies in network structure rather than in one isolated travel time. A direct elevated connection along the Varuna corridor could:
- Move northern highway traffic toward the railway district without using the most congested surface roads.
- Improve the relationship between NH-31 and the Ring Road.
- Create a more legible route from the northern regional network toward central transport hubs.
- Reduce the need for some traffic to cross the city on existing surface roads.
- Change the relative usefulness of Sandaha, Harhua, and other access points once the full system is operational.
The corridor should not currently be used as a confirmed alternative in a travel itinerary. Its approval is a planning milestone, not proof of completed infrastructure. Construction sequencing, package completion, junction design, and final access rules will determine its practical value.
The corridor’s likely effect on travelers
The strongest impact would be on travelers whose journeys combine the northern highway network with Kashi Railway Station or central Varanasi. At present, such movement depends on a combination of Ring Road links and city roads. A direct elevated route could reduce interaction with surface-level congestion.
It would not eliminate the need to understand the city’s spatial structure. The corridor would still terminate at defined junctions. Travelers heading to the ghats would continue to require a final urban transfer. Infrastructure can shorten the approach; it cannot remove the distinction between a railway corridor, a central road, and a pedestrian temple district.
A route strategy for different arrival directions
The Ring Road is easiest to use when the journey is planned from outside the city inward.
From Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport
Use Harhua as the principal peripheral reference point. Continue toward Sarnath or the relevant northern corridor if the destination lies in that direction. For central or southern hotels, treat the airport-to-city movement as a separate urban transfer after leaving the bypass.
From Lucknow
NH-56 leads toward the Harhua side of the Ring Road. Harhua is generally the logical entry point for airport-side and Sarnath-side destinations. Central Varanasi and the southern ghats require further movement through the municipal network.
From Ghazipur
Sandaha is the relevant northern connection. The Ganga bridge between Sandaha and Rewasa provides a six-lane crossing and a route toward Sarnath that avoids some inner-city movement. Operational conditions should be confirmed if the journey depends on the bridge as a continuous through-route.
From Prayagraj or Mirzapur
Approach through NH-19 and use the Mohansarai–Rakhauna side of the Ring Road. This keeps the long-distance approach outside the central city. The final route toward the railway station, temple district, or riverfront must be selected after the destination is fixed.
From Kolkata
The same NH-19 logic applies. Mohansarai–Rakhauna is the principal southern and southeastern access point. Travelers should not expect the Ring Road to end near Godowlia. It is a bypass with urban connectors beyond its exits.
For a through journey
Use the Ring Road to remain outside Varanasi and connect with the relevant national highway. The bypass interconnects NH-19, NH-31, NH-56, NH-233, and NH-29. Its regional role is as important as its tourist role. Avoiding the central road grid can be more valuable than entering the city at all.
What travelers should confirm before departure
The broad route can be planned in advance. The final movement requires more precise information. A practical route brief should include:
- The exact hotel address, not only the name of a nearby ghat.
- The arrival highway and likely Ring Road interchange.
- Whether the vehicle is a private car, taxi, minibus, or coach.
- The road-accessible endpoint near the destination.
- Current bridge and interchange availability.
- The difference between a hotel near the city centre and a hotel with direct vehicle access.
- Sufficient time for the final urban transfer after leaving the bypass.
There is no reliable universal taxi or auto-rickshaw fare for each exit-to-ghat movement based on the available project information. Local charges vary by vehicle type, time, negotiation, and destination. The same limitation applies to toll assumptions across individual plazas. Route planning should therefore be based on connectivity and access, not on an unverified fixed fare.
The most common error is to choose an exit according to the name of the final attraction. A traveler bound for Kashi Vishwanath may assume that any route labeled Varanasi city centre is equivalent. It is not. The correct exit depends first on the highway of arrival, then on the city corridor, and finally on the vehicle restrictions around the destination.
Preservation and infrastructure are now one question
Varanasi’s Ring Road is a modern response to a historic spatial problem. The city’s sacred core developed around riverfront steps, narrow lanes, dense residential fabric, and localized commercial movement. That structure cannot absorb unlimited highway traffic without losing access and function.
The bypass, the Sandaha–Rewasa bridge, and the proposed Varuna Elevated Corridor represent different stages of the same planning objective: separate regional movement from the historic urban core. The success of that objective will depend on junction design, last-mile management, public transport integration, and the discipline of keeping heavy traffic on the outer network.
The Ring Road already provides a usable framework for choosing routes into Varanasi. Harhua is the airport and northwest gateway. Sandaha is the northern and Ghazipur-side connection. Mohansarai–Rakhauna is the southern highway entrance. None is a direct replacement for the city’s inner roads.
For travelers, the route is therefore best understood as a sequence rather than a single line: national highway, Ring Road interchange, urban connector, and final pedestrian or restricted-access approach. That sequence is the accurate map of modern Varanasi. The infrastructure reduces pressure on the historic city, but preservation will depend on whether the traffic is managed after it leaves the bypass as carefully as it is managed before.
